When you begin planning your wedding, you will have some big decisions to face surrounding the wedding photographing. Of course deciding on a photographer is the biggest concern, but another top question is whether to have the pictures taken before or after the wedding ceremony.
There are advantages and disadvantages to either timeframe and we’ll explore them here, but ultimately, it’s up to you and what will work best in your situation.
Before the wedding:
Taking them beforehand means a smoother transition between the ceremony and the reception. People are not waiting around wondering what to do while they wait for you, they know to go straight to the reception so they can start celebrating with you.
You don’t have to feel rushed or guilty because your guests are waiting. You can take your time with having your pics snapped prior to the ceremony, which means you’ll probably have a more successful session.
As the bride and groom, you are very thrilled and excited after being pronounced man and wife, and these feelings get a little lost if you get interrupted by the wedding photographing before continuing on with celebrating. Plus it feels like your party is starting without you.
After the wedding:
Many people consider it bad luck for the groom to see the bride before the wedding, and he certainly would if they were having pictures taken beforehand. That very special moment when the groom sees the bride for the first time in her gown walking up the isle is lost because he’s already seen her.
Another problem may be you or your fiancé are feeling way too nervous, stressed out, and emotional before the wedding. It’s hard to crack a carefree smile when you’re nervous. Or you may burst out crying when you pose with your parents. You might be more comfortable with doing it after the ceremony.
Depending on the weather on your wedding day, outdoor pictures can end up in wind-swept hairdos, muddied hems, and ruined high heels for the bridal party.
A big issue when working with the photographer before the wedding is that of time. The professional photographer knows how long the session will take, but an amateur may not. This is not the time for anyone to be late, as this needs to get done before you can proceed with the wedding on schedule.
These are some considerations to take into account when deciding on your wedding photographing. There are workarounds and compromises for many of these issues and by figuring out your options, you’ll find the best solution for you.
