Congratulations, you two have decided to tie the knot!  Now it’s time to plan for your wedding, and unless you have an unlimited budget, you might want some help with some wedding savings tips.

There was a time when the parents of the bride footed the whole bill, but now with so many families struggling, along with the older age of people getting married and the fact that quite a few have already been living together, the bride and groom are more than likely paying for the wedding.

Wedding savings tips:

1.  Set up a budget and stick to it.  Recognize that your choices are totally up to you, and you can save in one area so you can splurge in another.  The point is to use available money rather than take out a loan.  Avoid starting your married life out having to pay off debts.  It kind of takes the magic out of the whole wedding thing.

2.  Cut down the number of guests where possible.  If you have a hard time with this idea, just figure out how much you’ll be spending per guest (catering, cake, size of room, table decorations, chair rental, etc. all factor in.)  This should help you see it realistically.

3.  Decide on the date of the wedding as far in advance as you can so you can shop for bargains and sales on your wedding attire and any decorations.  Likewise, you may get a discount for booking the reception venue early, and you certainly won’t have to scramble around at the last minute and paying a high price for the only place still available. Ditto the wedding photographing.

4.  Get married off-season or on a Friday.  Many reception venues are booked out in advance for Saturdays and will offer a discount for Fridays.  Having the ceremony in the off-season, which is usually winter, can mean deep discounts in venue, catering, music, and the honeymoon.

5.  Look around for some low cost alternatives for an affordable wedding reception venue.  Your rich uncle’s backyard or a reception area in your church are two such examples.

6.  The biggest of the wedding savings tips is Do-It-Yourself when you can.  Create the table decorations, bake the cake, make the invitations, or arrange your bouquet.  Use your skills plus those of friends and family.  They would love to pitch in and help.

7.  If diamond rings aren’t in the budget right now, go with classic wedding bands with special inscriptions inside.  You can add the diamonds at a later date when you can better afford them.

You can plan a beautiful wedding on a budget and these wedding savings tips are the place to start.  Plan early and have an open mind.
